Indian ethnic wear often uses delicate fabrics, intricate embroidery, and natural dyes. Proper care ensures your garments remain vibrant and beautiful for years to come.
Silk (Sarees, Lehengas)
- Dry clean only — avoid machine or hand washing silk.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
- Fold along existing creases and store in a muslin cloth, not plastic.
- Iron on low heat from the reverse side; use a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric.
- Avoid spraying water or perfume directly on silk.
Cotton (Salwar Kameez, Kurtas)
- Machine wash on a gentle/delicate cycle in cold water.
- Wash dark colours separately to prevent bleeding.
- Do not tumble dry — hang in shade to air dry to retain shape and colour.
- Iron on medium heat while slightly damp for best results.
- Block-print and hand-painted items should be washed inside-out in cold water only.
Georgette & Chiffon
- Hand wash gently in cold water with mild detergent, or dry clean.
- Do not wring — gently squeeze out excess water and hang to dry in shade.
- Iron on very low heat or use a steamer to remove wrinkles.
- Heavily embellished georgette should always be dry cleaned.
Embroidered & Embellished Garments
- Always dry clean garments with zari, sequins, mirror work, or heavy embroidery.
- Store flat or rolled (not folded tightly) to avoid crushing embellishments.
- Wrap in tissue paper before storing to prevent snagging.
- Never iron directly on embroidery — use a pressing cloth or steam from a distance.
General Tips:
- Always check the care label on your specific garment.
- Air garments after wearing before storing — avoid storing damp or worn clothes.
- Use cedar blocks or neem leaves in storage to deter moths naturally.
- For stains, blot gently — never rub, as this can spread the stain or damage fibres.
